‘Blue Bloods’ Introduced This Fan-Favorite Character—But Didn’t Know What to Do With Him

When Blue Bloods introduced Joe Hill, fans quickly took a liking to the newest member of the Reagan family. As the grandson of Frank Reagan and the son of the late Joe Reagan, Joe brought a fascinating new connection to the family’s complicated history.

Played by Will Hochman, Joe Hill was introduced as a talented young NYPD officer who had been quietly living outside the Reagan family spotlight. His arrival opened the door to plenty of story possibilities, especially because of his connection to Joe Reagan, whose death had shaped the family long before the series began.

Despite that potential, Blue Bloods never seemed to fully know what to do with Joe. The character appeared periodically rather than becoming a consistent part of the main storyline. While his relationship with the Reagan family created plenty of emotional opportunities, Joe’s role often felt secondary compared with Danny, Jamie, Erin, and the other established characters.

Still, Joe Hill became a fan favorite. Viewers appreciated seeing another generation of the Reagan family enter the NYPD and hoped the show would give him a larger role. His appearances also added another layer to the family’s legacy and reminded fans of the sacrifices made by his father.

Joe’s limited presence remains one of the more noticeable missed opportunities in Blue Bloods. The character had the family connection, the police background, and the history needed to carry compelling storylines. Yet the series never fully capitalized on his potential before coming to an end.

For many fans, Joe Hill represented a character who could have become a much bigger part of the Blue Bloods universe. Even with limited screen time, however, he left a lasting impression—and his connection to the Reagan family made him one of the most memorable additions to the later seasons.
