‘Boston Blue’ Bosses Reveal What It Would Take to Bring Tom Selleck Back to the ‘Blue Bloods’ Universe

Fans of Blue Bloods have been hoping to see Tom Selleck return as Frank Reagan ever since the long-running CBS drama ended in 2024. Now, the creative team behind its spinoff, Boston Blue, has offered a new glimpse into what it would take to bring the beloved character back to television.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the showrunners are still interested in having Selleck reprise his role, but they want to make sure his return makes sense for the story. While several familiar faces from Blue Bloods have already appeared in the spinoff, Selleck has yet to join them.

Co-showrunner Brandon Margolis explained that bringing the veteran actor back remains a dream for the team. He emphasized that the decision would ultimately depend on whether the story called for Frank Reagan’s presence.

Margolis also acknowledged that Selleck has a busy schedule, making the possibility of an appearance an ongoing conversation rather than a confirmed plan. His comments suggest that the door remains open, although fans should not interpret the show’s interest as confirmation that the actor will return.

Fellow co-showrunner Brandon Sonnier shared a similar outlook, expressing confidence that the right story could eventually emerge. He described the prospect of writing an episode featuring Frank Reagan as an exciting opportunity for the creative team.

Since Blue Bloods concluded after 14 seasons, Boston Blue has continued the franchise through Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan, who begins a new chapter in Boston. The spinoff has also welcomed familiar faces, including Bridget Moynahan as Erin Reagan and Len Cariou as Henry Reagan.

However, Selleck has previously expressed reservations about continuing to play Frank Reagan in another series. In comments reported last year, the actor explained that he wanted to preserve Blue Bloods‘ place in television history but did not necessarily see himself continuing the role indefinitely.

That makes his potential appearance in Boston Blue particularly intriguing. Although the showrunners would clearly welcome him, any return would need to align with Selleck’s wishes and the direction of the story.

For now, there is no confirmed agreement for Selleck to appear in the spinoff. Still, the show’s creative team has made its position clear: if the right story comes along, Frank Reagan could have a place in the Boston Blue universe.
