Tom Selleck Was Cast as Indiana Jones — Here’s Why It Never Happened
Before Tom Selleck became a television icon thanks to Magnum, P.I. and later Blue Bloods, he was on the verge of landing one of the most legendary roles in movie history. In fact, Selleck was the original choice to play Indiana Jones before scheduling conflicts forced him to walk away.
In the late 1970s, director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas were searching for the perfect actor to lead Raiders of the Lost Ark. Selleck quickly rose to the top of their list, impressing both filmmakers with his charisma, rugged charm, and natural screen presence. He even completed a successful screen test, and many believed the role was his.
However, there was one major obstacle. Selleck had already committed to filming the television series Magnum, P.I.. Although the show had not yet become a hit, the network decided to hold him to his contract, making him unavailable for Spielberg’s production schedule.
With Selleck unable to participate, Spielberg and Lucas turned to Harrison Ford, who had previously worked with Lucas on Star Wars. Ford accepted the role and went on to make Indiana Jones one of cinema’s most beloved action heroes, starring in multiple blockbuster films over the following decades.
Selleck has often spoken positively about the experience, saying he has no regrets despite missing the opportunity. Magnum, P.I. became a massive success, earning him widespread recognition, multiple award nominations, and establishing him as one of television’s biggest stars. The series ultimately paved the way for a long and successful career that later included his memorable portrayal of Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods.
Looking back, it’s one of Hollywood’s greatest “what if” stories. While fans can only imagine what Tom Selleck’s version of Indiana Jones might have looked like, his career flourished in a different direction, while Harrison Ford’s portrayal became an enduring part of film history.
